Abstract: Herbert G. Klein was born in Los Angeles in 1918 and died in San Diego in 2009. He married Marjorie G. Galbraith in Long beach
in 1941. After serving for four years as an officer in the Navy, Herb Klein worked for the Alhambra Post-Advocate from 1946
to 1950. In 1950 he joined the San Diego Union, becoming Editor in 1959. He left the paper in 1968 and became White House
Communications Director during the Nixon Administration, after working on many Nixon campaigns. After leaving the White House
in 1973, he worked for Metromedia and as a media consultant before rejoining the Copley Press as Editor-in-Chief in 1980.
He retired from Copley in 2003. Herb Klein wrote the book Making It Perfectly Clear: An Inside Account of Nixon’s Love-Hate
Relationship With the Media. This collection was donated to the Public Library via Dr. Iris Engstrand, professor from the
University of San Diego.
