Gift of Arthur Hurwith, representative of G40 Plus Club on December 10, 1996 with additions in 1997.

Biography/Administrative History

Arthur Hurwith was a teacher, principal, and housing activist who was involved with the Imperial Council of San Francisco, G-40 Plus Club/Prime Timers, and the Unitarian Universalist Gay and Lesbian Caucus. He was a founding board member of Openhouse, which provides housing, services, and community for LGBT seniors.

Scope and Content of Collection

The bulk of the collection consists of slides from Hurwith’s travels, dating back to 1947, as well as materials related to the Imperial Council, Unitarian Univeralists, and G- 40 Plus Club. Some carousels of slides have been labeled, but most are unsorted. Imperial Council materials include flyers, programs, mass mailings and a denim banner. The Unitarian Universalist Gay Caucus materials include a newsletter, historical notes, an education packet, flyers, and a pamphlet, all dating to 1977-1981. The remainder of the collection is composed of ephemera related to Hurwith’s causes and cultural events he attended, as well as some personalia, including a 1959 yearbook from Syosset High School in New York, where Hurwith taught geometry. Also of note is a bronze statue from the leather bar Febe's.
