Scope and Content Note

This series contains materials created and collected by David Lieber during his time as a student at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University, as well as materials related to his dissertation, "The Ethics of Henry Sidgwick". It includes course materials and lecture notes, and is organized by date.

Biography/Organization History

Historical Note: In 1944, at age 19, Dr. Lieber received his bachelor of arts degree magna cum laude from the College of the City of New York, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received a Bachelor of Hebrew Letters degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America that same year. In 1947 Dr. Lieber was awarded a master's degree in philosophy from Colombia University. He received his ordination from JTS a year later, in 1948. In 1951, Dr. Lieber received a Doctor of Hebrew Literature degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary. His dissertation was on Tehilim. The decade Dr. Lieber spent at the Jewish Theological Seminary was an extraordinary time to be at the intellectual center of the Conservative movement, and it made a great impression on him. He studied under the tutelage of some of the foremost Jewish scholars of the time, including Talmudist Saul Lieberman, Jewish Bible scholar H.L. Ginsberg, and philosopher Mordecai Kaplan. Dr. Leiber also pursued postgraduate studies at Columbia University, the University of Washington in Seattle, and UCLA.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains teaching materials created and collected by David Lieber during his time as a professor at the University of Judaism (American Jewish University), the Los Angeles Hebrew High School, and other educational venues. It includes course materials, lecture notes, handouts, assignments, syllabi, bibliographies, exams, student work, and copies of articles and chapters from books. The materials are arranged alphabetically by course name.

Biography/Organization History

Historical Note: In 1956, Dr. Lieber was appointed Dean of students at the University of Judaism, a position he held until he assumed the presidency. From 1957-1990, Dr. Lieber was a visiting member of the Near Eastern Language Department of UCLA. In 1993, after 29 years of service, Dr. Lieber retired as president of the University of Judaism. He continued to teach at the university as the Flora and Arnold Skovron Distinguished Service Professor of Biblical Literature and Thought.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains materials created and collected by David Lieber relating to his time as president of the University of Judaism (American Jewish University). It includes reports, messages, programs, speeches, essays, and other materials organized by year.

Biography/Organization History

Historical Note: Dr. Lieber served for 29 years as president of the American Jewish University (formerly University of Judaism). As president, he had helped build the University into a nationally recognized educational institution complete with an undergraduate college, graduate programs in education, Jewish studies, non-profit management, and rabbinic studies. He had also overseen the University's acquisition of its current 25-acre campus. In 1993, after 29 years of service, Dr. Lieber retired as president of the University of Judaism.

Biography/Organization History

Historical Note: Over the years, Dr. Lieber wrote many articles published in Commentary, The Christian Century, the Reconstructionist, the Torch, Jewish Education and more. Dr. Lieber was the general editor of Etz Hayim: Torah and Commentary, first published in 2001, sponsored jointly by the Rabbinical Assembly and the Jewish Publication Society.
