J. Dale Goodnight graduated from San Jose High School in 1932 and San Jose State University in 1938. He received his teaching certificate in 1941 and taught Industrial Arts in two local schools. He learned the building trade from his father, who was a carpenter, and began building custom homes in 1946. He retired as a building contractor in 1979, and passed away on April 15, 1989.

The collection consists mainly of Goodnight's ledgers for each calendar year, listing expenses paid for each housing project. The most complete ledger set comprises the years 1960-1980. Income tax records for the years 1962 through 1967 are also included.
