Biography
Joseph Scott (1867-1958) was a Los Angeles attorney, writer, orator and prominent Catholic layman, who served many years on
the Los Angeles Board of Education, and as president of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce from 1910-1911.
Description of the Joseph Scott Collection
This collection consists of scrapbooks, an audio recording of a dinner given for Joseph Scott, a transparency of a photograph
of the man, and a happy birthday scroll and program from a testimonial dinner. The scrapbooks contain newspaper articles
with reports of Scott's speeches on education, Americanism and patriotism, Catholicism, and other topics, from 1909 to 1939.
Some articles are about the Knights of Columbus; Scott's legal cases (including his role as defense attorney in the McNamara
bombing case); his support for Republican politicians such as presidential candidates Charles Evans and Herbert Hoover and
California gubernatorial candidate Buron Fitts. There is some personal information in the articles, sometimes in the form
of brief biographical sketches and other times in the form of articles about family members (such as the one about Scott's
son's 1909 death from rabies). One scrapbook (1919-1921) is titled "Irish clippings" and contains articles about topics relating
to British rule in Ireland, Irish Republic's president Eamon de Valera's 1919 U.S. visit. There are also reprints of speeches
on related topics by Scott and others.
As mentioned above, this collection contains a transparency of a photograph of Joseph Scott and an audiocassette that records
a dinner given in 1951 to honor Joseph Scott on his 84th birthday. Roger Jessup, chair of the Los Angeles County Board of
Supervisors, was chiefly responsible for the organization of the dinner, with aid from such persons as Oscar A. Trippett.
The dinner includes a talk by Joseph Scott in which he reflects on his life and his adopted country, the United States of
America.
The collection contains other fetes in honor of Joseph Scott: a program for a testimonial dinner in 1957 and happy birthday
scroll signed by dignitaries.
In 2003 Father Alonso Scott donated the recording of the dinner honoring Joseph Scott and the transparency. The Loyola Law
School donated the scrapbooks to the Department of Archives and Special Collections at unknown date. The program for the 1957
testimonal dinner and the happy birthday scroll came from dpartmental materials of William S. Rosecrans III. They were added
to this collection for better access.
