The San Antonio Fruit Exchange was founded in 1893 in Pomona, California, as a cooperative
group of local citrus growers and distributors. The exchange contained an assortment of
southern California growers whose fruit was sold at standardized prices to both local and
national entities. The group also participated in the larger collective fruit agencies of
the period such as the California Fruit Growers Exchange and the Southern California Fruit
Exchange. On its own, and as part of the larger fruit agencies, the group sought to combine
high quality fruit at controlled prices throughout the United States and eventually into
parts of Europe.
The San Antonio Fruit Exchange records contains 46 items from 1893 to 1947, including
annual reports, minutes, stock books and bylaws. The annual reports from 1894 to 1923 of the
exchange contain information on the business practices of the exchange and its members along
with comments that refer more generally to the citrus industry as a whole. The minutes from
1894 to 1924 are from Board of Director and stockholder meetings and contain information on
the Exchange's day-to-day operations. The stock books from 1893 to 1926 contain information
on the group's stockholders, including lists of names and actual stock certificates. The
bylaws portion of the collection from 1893 to 1947 contains both the group's original bylaws
as well as their subsequent revisions. Issues of prominence within the collection include
the history of the California citrus fruit industry; the cooperative marketing of citrus
fruits; the California Fruit Growers Exchange; the San Antonio Fruit Exchange; the Southern
California Fruit Exchange; and Sunkist Growers, Inc.
