Abstract: This collection includes correspondence, publications, fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, speech transcripts, photographs,
videos, video logs, audio cassettes, and other material. Loda Mae Davis (1898-1989) was the first Dean of Women at the University
of California, Riverside when it opened in 1954. The entire collection was for the Loda Mae Davis Women's Archive. The first
part of the collection describes Davis' papers and the rest of the collection documents the life and work of female faculty
members who contributed to the UCR academic community. Each file includes an oral history interview and supporting material.

Processing History
Processing of the Loda Mae Davis papers was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside
as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded
by the UCR Library and administered by Jessica Geiser, Collections Management Librarian.
Collection Scope and Contents
This collection includes correspondence, publications, fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, speech transcripts, photographs,
videos, video logs, audio cassettes, and other material. Loda Mae Davis (1898-1989) was the first Dean of Women at the University
of California, Riverside when it opened in 1954. Davis earned an undergraduate degree in commerce (1923) and a graduate degree
in business (1932) at UC Berkeley. An economic analyst, consumer rights advocate, and world traveler, she worked for the WPA
and other Federal entities during the Roosevelt administration, then for the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration following
World War II. She also completed graduate work in psychology at University of California, Berkeley (UCB) prior to her appointment
as Dean at UCR. Included are Davis' personal and professional papers and an oral history interview. The rest of the collection
documents the life and work of female faculty members who made notable contributions to the UCR academic community. Each
file includes an oral history interview, and supporting material
Collection Arrangement
The collection is serparated into personal papers of Loda Mae Davis and Betty Clark Moore under series one and two. The next
two series regard the Loda Mae Davis Women's Archive's creation and the Oral History Project that was to be apart of the archive.
The last two series consist of Audio/Visual and Digital materials that were recorded for the Oral History Project. The collection
is arranged into six series as follows:

Biographical / Historical
Loda Mae Davis (1898-1989) was born in Washington State to homesteaders in 1898. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1923 and
continued on to obtain a Master's of Science in Business in 1932. She continued to study at Berkeley as a graduate student
in Psychology. During the Great Depression she traveled the world for several years before returning to the United States
and joining the Works Project Administration. She spent well over a decade working for the US Government or as a consultant.
Davis joined the new University of California, Riverside faculty in 1953 as the Dean of Women and also served as an Associate
Dean of Students during her over ten years at UCR. She remained a part of the UCR community after her retirement, helping
to found the Loda Mae Davis Archive and serve as a mentor to women in academia.

The series covers Loda Mae Davis's personal and professional materials. Specifically there are her published work and magazine
edits, correspondence with her family and fellow scholars. In 1960, Loda Mae Davis went to Samoa on sabbatical to study nutrition
and living conditions. Her field notes and letters to others during this time is included. This series also discusses Loda
Mae Davis's time at the University of California, Riverside as a professor and advocate for women's rights within the university.

This sub-series contains information on Loda Mae Davis's background from childhood to adulthood. There are images of the Davis
family dating from 1898-1984, five years before Loda Mae Davis's death in 1989. It includes the telling of her own story,
genealogy research, and awards received and recognition of the organizations she was a part of such as the Delta Kappa Gamma
Society and American Association of University Women. This sub-series also discusses Loda Mae Davis's death and memorial.

Women's Archives which was originally created in the early 1990's. An oral history project began in 1987 when Loda Mae Davis's
oral history was recorded. This series includes the inventories of the collection, descriptions of the original collections
order, and correspondence of the founding of the Loda Mae Davis Women's Archives.

Oral History Project

Series Scope and Contents
This series is based on the oral history project a part of the Loda Mae Davis's Oral History Project which began in 1987 Loda
Mae Davis was interviewed. Two graduate students Ms. Jennifer Fisher and Jeff Friedman recorded women in academia associated
with Loda Mae Davis and processed the collection until 1999. The materials in the series pertain to each individual that was
interviewed, with subjects a part of the interview process separated out. Many of the women's information contains letters
of agreement for the interview, response to questionnaires, draft and edited transcripts of the interviews, publicatiions,
and research on the women's background.
Most of the women who were interviewed also have a tape or floppy disk recording of their interview. These are located in
boxes 11-14.

Series Scope and Contents
This series contains audio/visual materials of Loda Mae Davis and women in academia at the University of California, Riverside
taken from 1987-2000. Most of the material in this series are interview tapes of women who made a difference at UCR and/or
were associated with the work of Loda Mae Davis. These tapes are connected to the oral history interview transcripts in boxes
4-10 and digital material in box 14. There is also a VHS tape titled "Loda Mae Davis: A Remarkable Woman" and record on a
dedication event to those in the science field.
