    Scope and Contents

    The League of Women Voters of San Diego Records (1937-1998) document the League's programs in voter service, citizen education, action and advocacy programs. The collection also includes documents created by the state-level organization, League of Women Voters of California (LWV-CA), and the national organization, the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWV-US). The collection contains a wide variety of documents, including meeting agendas and minutes, reports, correspondence & memos, newsletters, publications, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and scrapbooks. The collection is arranged in five series: Administrative Files; Program Files; Publications; Photographs and Audiovisual Materials; and Scrapbooks.
    The Administrative Files (1942-1994) includes the agendas, minutes, and reports from Board meetings and local conventions; annual reports and Board reports; financials records; public and internal correspondence; membership files; and yearbooks.
    The Program Files (1946-1994) series documents the League of Women Voters of San Diego's programs in voter service/citizen education, voter registration drives, and advocacy & action around political issues. This series also includes the LWV-SD's subject files on a wide range of political issues, such as education and public schools; housing, mental health, natural resources and environmental protection; San Diego City government reform; urban planning and redevelopment; and water. Of special interest are files documenting the LWV-SD's annual Women of Vision awards, honoring San Diego area women's public service, from 1987-1996.
    The Publications (1938-1998) includes a variety of newsletters, newspapers, and reports published by the League of Women Voters of San Diego and the state-level and national League. Most notable are the LWV-SD's local San Diego Voter newsletters issued from 1938-1998, and the occasional Election Extra newspaper, published to coincide the local elections.
    The Photographs and Audiovisual Materials (1956-1970) includes photographs of League activities and meetings from the 1950s-1970s. This series also includes a variety of audio recordings, such as LWV-SD meetings and activities, educational programs produced by the LWV-US.
    Several Scrapbooks (1937-1971) a include newspaper clippings and publicity material from League events and programs.

    Historical Note

    The League of Women Voters of San Diego, Inc. (LWV-SD) is a non-partisan, voluntary, non-profit corporation. LWV-SD was organized in 1936 as a local chapter of the national League of Women Voters of the United States, to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in local, county, state, and national government.
    LWV-SD's programs include voter service and citizen education through its League of Women Voters Education Fund, were the League presents unbiased and nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process and political issues. The League's programs also include an action and advocacy component, whereby the League takes positions on political issues through the use of study committees.
    During the 1940s-1950s the LWV-SD's programs included study committees issues such as health, housing, juvenile protection, the San Diego harbor, San Diego County government, jury selection, public schools, receiving homes for neglected children, the United Nations, and UNESCO. The League also made several surveys of issues such as San Diego County services, land use & City government, metropolitan planning, and urban renewal.
