Biographical Note
Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), French chemist and microbiologist. Pasteur worked with
fermentation, contributed to the development of the first vaccines for diseases such
as rabies and anthrax, and debunked the myth of spontaneous generation; the process
known as pasteurization is named after him. Pasteur died, after a series of strokes,
on September 28, 1895.

Arrangement
Chronological
Cataloging Decisions
1. The collection was originally MS Collection 12 (1-4); it was decided to rename it
the Louis Pasteur Collection and to rearrange the material chronologically. The Burndy Library also acquired an empty wine
bottle: “Louis Pasteur / Vin Rouge” (provenance unknown); it was decided to add this bottle to the Louis Pasteur Collection.
2. The collection contains modern transcriptions, descriptions, sale catalogue
information; these are noted on the folders and in the Container List but are not
included in the final count of cataloged items.
