Scope and Contents

A small collection of photographs that belonged to William Muranishi, a young Japanese-American man from Isleton, California who was incarcerated at the Gila River War Relocation Center in Arizona during World War II. Included are at least a dozen photographs taken at the internment camp, showing young men posing singly or in groups in front of the spare prison buildings or the camp water tower; six of these images have inscriptions on the front all "to Bill" from other young men at the camp. There are a number of other photographs belonging to Muranishi, some of which may have been taken at the camp - a small snapshot of a baseball team, a studio portrait stamped "Hanasong Studio," and a handful of portraits, all with ink inscriptions on the fronts, three adding detailed inscriptions in Japanese on the versos. Finally, there is a typed note measuring 5 x 5 inches that reads "Mr. Bill Muranishi Just a little token of appreciation from the Deltens Jr., wishing you the best of luck through relocation...Best of luck...Deltens Jr." The note also contains a list of Japanese-American names, possibly other inmates at the camp.
