Collection contains correspondence about pain research between George H. Bishop and D. O. Hebb. "Between December 28, 1950 and April 30, 1957 Donald Hebb and George Bishop exchanged letters containing ideas on pain and its neurophysiology and psychology. Hebb preserved his copies of the correspondence and, on his retirement in 1977 from the chair of psychology at McGill University, Montreal, he gave them to his student, Ronald Melzack. He had already shared them with Melzack, as he received them, while Melzack worked with him as a graduate student. Melzack describes them as 'A joy to read' and said they had a powerful impact on his thinking. In 1995, Melzack donated them to the History of Pain Collection at the Biomedical Sciences Library [sic] of the University of California, Los Angeles."--Thoughts and findings on pain: the Hebb-Bishop correspondence and a selection of papers / edited by Harold Merskey (Toronto: Canadian Pain Society, 1996), p. 2.
