    Scope and Content of Collection

This collection contains administrative materials and ephemera related to the oldest openly-gay musical group in the world, the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Marching Band and Twirling Corps. The Band was founded in 1978 by Jon Sims in response to Anita Bryant’s anti-gay campaign. It was later known as the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band. There are band notes, by-laws and directories, flyers, posters, programs, scrapbooks and a button. The bulk of the programs are from events the Band played at and concerts they gave, but some are from LGBTQ+ theater more generally. Other groups represented in the collection include the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, Bread and Roses and Theatre Rhinoceros.
