Biography/Administrative History
Kanae Nagasawa (sometimes spelled Kanaye Nagasawa; original name: Isonaga Hikonosuke), b. Kagoshima (Satsuma) Prefecture,
Japan 1852, d. Santa Rosa, Calif. 1934; member of the secret 1865 Japanese Satsuma student mission to Great Britain; became
closely associated with Thomas Lake Harris and his Brotherhood of the New Life communities in Amenia and Brocton, N.Y. and
at Fountain Grove in Santa Rosa, Calif.; the first Japanese national to reside permanently in the United States; credited
as the first Japanese winemaker in United States and the first to introduce California wines to Japan.
Scope and Content of Collection
Carte de visite albums compiled by Kanae Nagasawa, containing studio portraits of Nagasawa and other Japanese students, many
associated with the 1865 Satsuma student mission to Great Britain; and of Thomas Lake Harris and others associated with the
Brotherhood of New Life activities. Most portraits of Nagasawa and other Japanese are contained in album B.
