Processing Note
Each photographic image has been assigned an Item number; there are instances of multiple physical forms of each image (e.g.

The negatives were originally housed in glassine envelopes. Inside most envelopes was a piece of paper indicating the name
of the vessel, sometimes with additional information about the location or date. These pieces of paper have been retained

PHILIP LIVINGSTON (1945), PRESIDENT JOHNSON (1946), ROBERT FULTON (1946), CHRISTOPHER S. FLANAGAN (1949), HAWAIIAN CRAFTSMAN
(1952), PACIFICUS (1953-1954), and possibly others. He also worked as a shipping and receiving clerk for Weisfield's Jewelers.
Manion married Patricia Lavell in 1951, but they eventually divorced. They had five children together.

Collection Scope and Content
The Mervyn P. Manion photographs, 1913-1915, 1934-1950, bulk 1940-1950, (SAFR 24251, P91-084) are comprised of photographs
taken by Mervyn P. Manion of passenger and cargo vessels primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. The collection
has been processed to the Item level and is open for use.
Contains photographs of ferries, motor scows, sailing vessels, and merchant steamships docked and underway in the San Francisco
Bay Area, California, and other locations, 1913-1915, 1934-1950, bulk 1940-1950. There are 152 unique photographic images
in 154 physical forms (132 black-and-white nitrate negatives, 20 black-and-white safety negatives, and 2 black-and-white photographic
prints).
Most photographs are located in San Francisco and other Bay Area locations, including Oakland, Alameda, and Sausalito. Additional
photographs were taken in other West Coast locations (Coos Bay and Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; Alaska; and Hawaii),
the East Coast, and the Panama Canal.
Collection Arrangement
Arranged into one Series with five File Units by vessel type. Within each File Unit, Items are arranged alphabetically by
vessel name.
File Unit 1: Sailing vessels.
- File Unit 2: Ferries and riverboats.
- File Unit 3: Motor scows.
- File Unit 4: United States Army Corps of Engineers and Navy vessels.
- File Unit 5: Other steamships.
SAFR-00326 had been grouped into mailing envelopes roughly based on vessel type (e.g., ferries, steamers, and scows). There
was no further arrangement (not by vessel name, date, or location). Due to the fact that some of the vessels in accession
SAFR-00326 also appeared in accessions SAFR-00578 and SAFR-00599, the processing archivist continued to group the vessels
by type and arrange them in alphabetical order by vessel name within each group.
