Background
Mervyn Paul Manion was born on October 10, 1916, in San Francisco, California. During World War II, he went to sea as a merchant marine and relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 1950. He served as a fireman and a messman aboard the steamships ULUA (1943), PHILIP LIVINGSTON (1945), PRESIDENT JOHNSON (1946), ROBERT FULTON (1946), CHRISTOPHER S. FLANAGAN (1949), HAWAIIAN CRAFTSMAN (1952), PACIFICUS (1953-1954), and possibly others. He also worked as a shipping and receiving clerk for Weisfield's Jewelers.
