Scope and Contents
The
Richard Griswold del Castillo Papers (1971-2009) document Griswold's work in the San Diego State University Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies and his
involvement in the Chicano Movement. Highlights include rare film footage of various events in San Diego's Chicano history
since the 1960s, such as the Chicano Park takeover. Also included are tape cassettes and transcripts from a Chicano History
Research Project, a CD-ROM containing Chicana and Chicano Studies Department archives, and materials from La Raza Forum. Filed
alphabetically, the collection consists of course materials, newsletters, and organizational files.

Biographical Note
Richard Griswold del Castillo (1942-) was born and raised in Santa Ana, California. He studied at UC Berkeley and the University
of Dijon, France, before earning B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating
in 1974, Griswold del Castillo taught at San Diego State University, was a Fulbright Scholar in Mexico City and published
several books including
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo: A Legacy of Conflict ,
North to Aztlán ,
and
The Los Angeles Barrio, 1850-1890: A Social History
. Griswold is married to Rita Sanchez and currently resides in San Diego.
