Scope and Content of Collection
The first half of the album of 129 collodion prints contains approximately 50 images of naval vessels, in ports and at sea.
Identified ports include Toulon, France and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam, while water views include the Dong-Nai River
and the Indian Ocean. The majority of the vessels are French, but some photographs also depict Russian and Italian ships.
The ships are identified by name, and many captions also give the type of vessel, such as destroyer, battleship, or cruiser.
There are multiple views of the French cruiser
Du Chayla, including three views of crew members on the deck in 1898. The multiple views of the
Du Chayla indicate that the album may have been assembled by a member of the French Navy who was serving aboard the vessel.
The second half of the album depicts views of French Indochina, including scenes of daily life, architecture, statuary, buildings,
and other sites in cities such as Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Mytho (Mỹ Tho), Cap Saint-Jacques, Vῖnh Long, Bển Lức, and Phnom
Penh. Local inhabitants depicted include indigenous Cambodian and Vietnamese peoples as well as Chinese merchants and Indian
families from Gujerat. Additionally, there are nine views of Toulon, France, including images of the port and local monuments.
The album is post-bound with red cloth covers, a red leather spine, and brass corners (the front cover is lacking its upper
right corner); a brass plaque centered on the front cover is engraved with the title and date.
The titles of the individual photographs are taken from the French captions written in black ink on the mounts below each
image, unless otherwise noted.
Arrangement
In original order. Arranged in a single series: Series I. Vues et photographies France, étranger.
Biographical/Historical Note
This album was likely assembled by a member of the French Navy who served on the frigate
Du Chayl.
