Historical Note
The School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles was established in 1947 as the Department of Public
Health. However, instruction in Public Health formally began two years prior with the establishment of a University of California
system-wide public health program. The Department began offering graduate study in 1955. On March 17, 1961 the Department
officially became the School of Public Health.
In the 1980s the School underwent a reorganization into five departments: Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental
Health Sciences, Epidemiology, and Health Services. The School currently sponsors several centers: The Center for Adolescent
Health Promotion, the Center to Elminate Health Disparities, Centers for Environmental Quality and Health, the Center for
Health Policy Research, the Center for Envrionmental Genomics, the Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities,
the Center for Human Nutrition, the Center for Public Health and Disasters, the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control
Center Research, and the Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center.
The Faculty Executive Committee of the School of Public Health is charged with considering matters of general concern to the
Faculty and acting for the Faculty with respect to matters delegated to it. In particular, it considers schoolwide and interdepartmental
issues, receive reports from the Standing Committees of the Faculty, reviews and makes recommendations of educational and
budgetary resources, planning, and academic priorities, and recommends to the Dean membership of the Standing Committees of
the Faculty. The Executive Committee is also responsible for submitting questions for vote to the entire Faculty. The Committee
is composed of one elected Faculty member from each of the departments in the School. The Dean of the School of Public Health
and the Associate Dean for Academic Programs are ex officio members of the Committee without a vote.

Health at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1965 - 1987.
