Historical Note
In 1976, a group of Spanish speaking Jews began holding services at Congregation Beth Israel's synagogue building at Third
and Laurel Streets in San Diego, as a second congregation at that location, under the name Or-El. The founding rabbi, Arnold
Kopikis was born in Argentina and had had a large congregation in Mexico City. The founding president was Eddy Cohen. Though
many of the congregants were from Latin and South America, the congregation grew into a truly international congregation.
They eventually moved to a rented facility on Camino Del Rio South and then to one on Camino de la Reina and then to another
rented space of Morena Blvd. In 1999 the congregation merged with Congregation Beth Tefilah to become Ohr Shalom Synagogue,
and in 2001 they relocated to the former home of Congregation Beth Israel, at 3rd and Laurel Streets in San Diego.
