The materials in this collection were left in their original order at the time of processing. Some of the original folders
were numbered, and some of these numbers were duplicated; all of these numbers were retained in the title on the new folders.
Biographical Note
Hiram W. Johnson (1866-1945) was the Governor of California from 1911 to 1917 and a United States Senator from the state of
California from 1917 to 1945. As a Senator, Johnson supported the construction of the Boulder dam (later called the Hoover
dam). He co-sponsered the Swing-Johnson bill, with Representative Phil D. Swing, that set forth the plan for the study of
the Colorado River, its flooding, the building of a dam, and electricity generation.
