    The materials in this collection were left in their original order at the time of processing. Some of the original folders were numbered, and some of these numbers were duplicated; all of these numbers were retained in the title on the new folders.

    Biographical Note

    Hiram W. Johnson (1866-1945) was the Governor of California from 1911 to 1917 and a United States Senator from the state of California from 1917 to 1945. As a Senator, Johnson supported the construction of the Boulder dam (later called the Hoover dam). He co-sponsered the Swing-Johnson bill, with Representative Phil D. Swing, that set forth the plan for the study of the Colorado River, its flooding, the building of a dam, and electricity generation.

    This collection of papers from Senator Hiram W. Johnson is comprised of materials related to the Colorado River, Boulder Canyon, Boulder (Hoover) dam, the Colorado River Commission and Compact, and other water related concerns associated with these topics. Materials include memoranda, publications with articles or other contents pertaining to the Colorado River, and Congressional materials (such as published versions of speeches and House and Senate legislation).
