    Abstract: This collection consists of photographs scanned from a scrapbook belonging to Mary Yamamoto Shimizu depicting life events including commencement ceremonies and social activities in Long Beach, Los Angeles, Massachusetts and Dartmouth College. The bulk of the photographs are of George Shimizu as Mary Shimizu curated photographs of herself and her then boyfriend, later husband.

    Content Description

    This collection consists of photographs scanned from a scrapbook belonging to Mary Yamamoto Shimizu depicting life events including commencement ceremonies and social activities in Long Beach, Los Angeles, Massachusetts and Dartmouth College. The bulk of the photographs are of George Shimizu as Mary Shimizu curated photographs of herself and her then boyfriend, later husband. Photographs of George Shimizu vary in topic and geographic location including Long Beach, Dartmouth College and Mindanao (Philippine Islands) where he served in the Military Intelligence Service. Mary Yamamoto Shimizu is also shown traveling to Heart Mountain Incarceration Camp.

    Biographical / Historical

    Mary Yamamoto Shimizu met her husband George Shimizu in June 1941 in Los Angeles. George was attending college at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and joined MIS right after graduation. Mary was sent to Heart Mountain Concentration Camp in Wyoming. In 1943, they were married at Camp Savage. They lived together in Los Angeles with their family after the war until Mary passed away.
