Scope and Contents of Collection
The records of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) contain data from quarterly cruises
as well as materials related to a drift bottle project. The collection has been arranged in two series: 1) DRIFT BOTTLE FILES
and 2) CRUISE DATA.
SERIES 1: DRIFT BOTTLE FILES
The first series, DRIFT BOTTLE FILES, contains materials related to drift bottle studies conducted off the coast of California
from 1963-1982. Materials include correspondence with people who find the bottles, papers and clippings about the project,
charts and data analysis, as well as an original card and photograph of a bottle.
SERIES 2: CRUISE DATA
The second series, CRUISE DATA, contains reports, documentation, and data collected during CalCOFI's quarterly cruises. The
series is arranged in three subseries: A) Cruise Files, B) CTD/STD Data, and C) Oversize Charts & Data.
A) Cruise Files
The Cruise Files subseries records data collected during CalCOFI's quarterly cruises. Materials include - but are not limited
to - personnel lists, station activity logs, weather observation reports, sample log sheets, and nutrient data. These files
are arranged chronologically with materials from 1972-1974 & 1983-2004.
While some CTD/STD Data sets are located in these files, the bulk can be found in subseries B) CTD/STD Data. Oversize materials
were relocated to subseries C) Oversize Charts & Data.
B) CTD/STD Data
CTD/STD Data are comprised of large computer printout lists of data. These generally correspond with the Cruise Files in
the previous subseries, but not all cruises have data found here. The subseries is arranged chronologically. Oversize charts
originally housed within these reports have been removed, flattened and stored in the following subseries, Oversize Charts
& Data.
C) Oversize Charts & Data
The final subseries contains charts and data sets larger than 11" x 14". These bulk of the charts were removed from the CTD/STD
Data files, flattened and stored together in flat boxes. The files are arranged chronologically by cruise.
Administrative History
In 1949, the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) was formed to study the ecological aspects
of the sardine population collapse off the coast of southern California. The effort, originally called the California Cooperative
Sardine Research Program, was designed as a joint effort by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the California Department
of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the California Academy of Sciences. CalCOFI, still in operation, conducts
quarterly cruises to collect hydrographic and biological data off the coast of southern and central California.
