    Biography

    Raymond A. Bankowski (1914-1993) was Professor of Virology at UC Davis. Dr. Bankowski earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in 1938 and subsequently began post-graduate research at UC Berkeley. During World War II, Dr. Bankowski left Berkeley to serve in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. After the war, he returned to Berkeley and completed a Ph.D. in comparative pathology.
    In 1950, Dr. Bankowski was hired as one of the first faculty members of the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis, where he chaired the Department of Avian Medicine from 1954 to 1959. His research focused on studying and controlling infectious diseases of animals. Dr. Bankowski's main focus was avian virology, but he also conducted extensive research into diseases of cattle and swine.
    In 1978, Dr. Bankowski retired from UC Davis. He remained active as emeritus faculty up until his death in 1993.
