A.J. and Elizabeth Camblein had three children and lived in Northern California in the late 1850s.

Scope and Contents

Three letters from A.J. and Elizabeth Camblein written to family. A.J. Camblein writes two letters from Minersville, Trinity County, California: one to relatives in 1857 and another to his mother in 1858. Camblein describes various aspects of life in California, including the climate, the state of mining and prospecting in the waning days of the gold rush, and opportunities for good land in the Western United States. He also speaks of his religious faith and expresses his positive opinions on life in California, advising his relatives to come for the work opportunities. Elizabeth Camblein moved to Petaluma after A.J. Camblein died during a cattle drive. She writes to her mother from there in 1860, describing the death of her husband, whom she refers to as Jackson, and the illness and subsequent death of one of her children.
