Content Description

Philip R. Lee's research files concerning his U.S. Public Health Service medical ecology trip to the Soviet Union. Materials include correspondence, journal entries, notes, printed material, glass slides, photographs, and sound recordings (transcription discs).

Biographical / Historical

Philip Randolph Lee (1924-) is a physician born in California, one of five children of Dr. Russel Van Arsdale Lee and Dorothy Lee. Philip R. Lee worked as a family physician, as Assistant Secretary for Health and Scientific Affairs in the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and as the chancellor of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). In 1960 he traveled to the Soviet Union with 5 other physicians, where he observed health care practices and socialized medicine as part of an exchange effort between the US and USSR to foster cooperation in public health between the two countries.
