Collection Scope and Content Summary
The Isidore Berne papers span the years 1943-1975 and encompass less than one linear foot. The collection consists almost
entirely of some 80 cast and crew sheets from the productions on which Berne worked from 1943 to 1971. Nearly half of the
sheets relate to Columbia Pictures productions from the mid-1940s to mid-1960s. Of interest is the material related to United
Lutheran Church in America films. A subject file contains a Marilyn Monroe calendar from "Escapade" magazine, an annotated
draft of a statement from Berne regarding his desire to become an assistant director, a program for the Tenth Annual Costumers
Ball, and a list of personnel at General Service Studios.
Biography
Isidore (Izzy) R. Berne (1915-1983) was a costume designer and wardrobe supervisor for film and television. He began working
in the maintenance department at Twentieth Century-Fox in the 1940s, but he soon moved to wardrobe and eventually worked as
a costumer at every major studio. Berne worked on many Columbia Pictures productions from the mid-1940s to mid-1960s.
