Series I.
Album I [Peru and Chile],
approximately 1868
Scope and Content Note
Album I [Peru and Chile] begins with a studio portrait of an Amazonian man wearing
traditional attire. It is followed by two portraits of indigenous men in street clothes
and one of two boys sitting in front of a tree. The portraits are followed by
photographs of Lima, Peru and environs (18), including the port city of Callao (4);
Chorillos, a coastal area south of Lima (3); Arequipa (3); and Arica, on the border of
Peru and Chile (3). The Lima photographs show general views of neighborhoods, important
buildings, plazas, streets, bridges and parks. The buildings include the Cathedral,
Palacio, Casa Torre-Tagle, and the house of María Micaela Villegas y Hurtado de Mendoza,
a Peruvian actress known as La Perricholi. Other Lima views include the Alameda de los
Descalzos, the Plaza de Armas, and Calle Valladolid. Two of the Chorillos photographs
show the garden of President Juan Antonio Pezet. The views of Arequipa, taken shortly
after the earthquake of 1868, include two views of the ruined cathedral and one view of
the plaza covered with tents and surrounded by ruined buildings. At Arica, which was
part of Peru at the time the photographs were taken, one image shows the port before the
tidal wave caused by the earthquake of 13 August 1868, and two photographs show large
ships stranded on land following the tidal wave, including the gunboat USS
Wateree, which was carried inland by the second wave. The
album concludes with a view of a Bolivian plaza a large temporary [?] shrine erected in
front of a central fountain; two views of mountainous locations in Chile; one view of
roof tops in a town in Chile; and one photograph captioned "Grotte de Robinson Crusoe"
showing a cave on one of the San Juan islands off the coast of Chile.

Series II.
Album II [Chile],
approximately 1868
Scope and Content Note
The group portraits, or genre scenes, at the start of album II [Chile] were taken
outdoors. The first shows what may be a family group with six indigenous persons seated

The portraits are followed by views of Valparaiso (17); Santiago (17); Viña del Mar (2);
and Cauquenes, a thermal resort (8). The photographs of Valparaiso show general views
along the shore; a hilly neighborhood; the Ancha and the Almendral districts; gardens,
including the garden of "Lorra"; a large cistern; and the railway bridge of Montenegro.
The views of Santiago include the main plaza; the Cathedral; the Alameda; the Palacio al
Alhambra; the "Ecole d'Artillerie;" a bridge made of stone; a wooden bridge; a cloister;
and a waterfall. The album concludes with views of Cauquenes.
