Biographical/Historical note
James Edward Straukamp was born June 23, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. By the 1930s, his family relocated to San Jose, California
where he attended a Jesuit high school. Inspired to become a priest, Straukamp joined the religious order and became ordained
in 1957. In addition, he attended Gonzaga University, where he received a Master's degree in Philosophy; University of Santa
Clara, where he received a degree in Theology; and UC Berkeley, where he studied Renaissance History. In 1969, he moved to
Sacramento where he taught history at Sacramento State until 1994.
Throughout his lifetime, Straukamp was a social activist who spoke out for human rights. In particular, he protested the Vietnam
War and helped counsel conscientious objectors during the draft. In the 1980s, he also reached out to victims of AIDS in the
Sacramento community.
On March 4, 2012, he passed away from Alzheimer's disease.
