Biographical/Historical Note

Félix Jacques Moulin, photographer of genre subjects, nudes, landscapes, and monuments, was active in Paris in the 1850s-1870s. In 1856-1857 Moulin traveled in Algeria with the express purpose of producing a photographic oeuvre of the region. Moulin returned from Algeria with approximately 448 negatives, 300 of which he published in six volumes entitled "L'Algérie photographique" (1858). He and his family printed and sold images from this group throughout the late 1850s-1860s, and they were also used as illustrations in both photographic journals and the popular press.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection includes mounted albumen images from the three northern Algerian provinces of Algiers, Constantine, and Oran which Moulin toured in 1856-1857. The photographs in this collection were most likely printed in the 1860s.The lone image from the province of Algiers is a view of Kbor Er Roumia, the first century B.C. mausoleum of the Mauritanian kings, near Tipasa, also known as the Tomb of the Christian, which was one of the first sites Moulin visited. Images from the province of Constantine include: four views of the oasis of Biskra, including a view of the remains of the 12th-century mosque of Sidi ben Fedhal and one of the ruins of the ancient casbah; a view of the oasis of El Kantara; a view of the city of Milianah; and three images from the city of Constantine, two of which show the city as situated on the dramatic gorges of the Rummel river, and one of the lower gallery of the palace of Hadj Ahmed, the last bey of Constantine. There are two views of medieval ruins in Tlemcen, Oran: one of the Aghadir Gate, and one of the Djemma El-Afra. There are also two views of unidentified locales, one showing an encampment of a desert tribe, and one of a village showing signs of recent construction and a large palm grove on its outskirts.
Captions on labels are in French with identification and numbers affixed to the lower right corners of mounts, unless otherwise noted.
