Abstract: The history scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, typed radio broadcast transcripts, and assorted ephemera that document
the scientific and social activities of members of Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1916-1960.
Scope and Content of Collection
The history scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, typed radio broadcast transcripts, and assorted ephemera that document
the scientific and social activities of members of Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1916-1960.
The early volumes include a large number of clippings from the local La Jolla Light's "Scripps Institutional Notes" column,
as well as columns written by Professor W. E. Allen, which were the forerunner for the SIO Communications Office's news releases.
From 1919-1942, Allen's news releases about upcoming events, visits to the institution, and articles on biology were carried
in local newspapers.
Several of the radio broadcast transcripts are brief interviews, while others are longer lectures from SIO scientists on a
wide range of topics. They document the pre-war, wartime, and post-war activities of SIO.
Historical Background
Annotations at the beginning of several of the volumes indicate that they were prepared by Dorothy Q. Vaughan, director T.
Wayland Vaughan's wife. The provenance of the later volumes (1936-1960) is unknown.
