Historical Note
The University of San Diego School of Law began accepting applications in April 1954 and graduated its first eight students
in 1958. The School of Law was accredited by the American Bar Association in 1961 and joined the Association of American Law
Schools in 1966. In 1996, the School of Law joined the Order of the Coif, an honorary scholastic society for legal education.
By 1973, enrollment had reached 877 students.
While part of the University of San Diego, the School of Law was largely independent until the merger of the College for
Women and College for Men in 1973. Prior to that, the Dean of the Law School dealt directly with the Bishop of the Diocese
of San Diego, who was also the President of the College for Men. Upon the merger, the Dean reported to the President of the
merged University.
The School of Law offered two separate programs, day and evening. The evening program catered more to local, currently employed
students. In the summer of 1973, the school launched a six-week law study program in Paris which was devoted to international
and comparative law. A law program in Guadalajara, Mexico began the next summer. Also in 1974, the Board of Visitors was established
which served as a channel of communication between the law school and the local bar association and the public.
By 2017 the School of Law continues to educate approximately 800 Juris Doctor and graduate law students each year and is known
for business and corporate law, constitutional law, intellectual property, international and comparative law, public interest
and taxation.
Scope and Content Note
The University of San Diego School of Law records include correspondence, reports, informational brochures, and news releases
pertaining to the early administration of the School of Law. The majority of the material dates from the 1950s to the 1980s
and includes materials gathered for the School of Law admittance into the American Bar Association and the American Association
of Law Schools as well as reports gathered for the California State Committee of Bar Examiners. Correspondence reflects the
administrative workings of the School of Law pertaining to programs and events, funding, and student education. Also included
in these records are informational brochures and news releases documenting events, appointments, and programs related to the
School of Law.
Oral Histories from the 2004
Conversations in Legal Education: Oral Histories of the First Half-Century of the University of San Diego School of Law
project coordinated by Ruth Levor are included. These include research, transcripts, and cassette tapes of the oral history
interviews.
Photographs, photograph albums, videos, and audio recordings are also included. Photographs and albums are primarily of School
of Law faculty, students, and events. Videos and audio are primarily of lecture series' and news coverage featuring School
of Law faculty.
