Organizational History

At the turn of the previous century, growing concern over the quality of life for rural Americans prompted President Theodore Roosevelt to appoint a Commission on Country Life in 1908. One of the direct outcomes of the Commission's recommendations was the passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914, which established a national extension service to place the knowledge generated at land-grant universities into the hands of farmers and rural citizens. The Agricultural Extension Service formalized and built upon existing efforts of land-grant universities to enhance the knowledge of farmers and apply scientific discoveries for improved agricultural practices. Beginning in 1913, the Agriculture Extension Service, later known as UC Cooperative Extension, placed farm advisors employed by the University of California in every county that formed a farm bureau and agreed to sponsor Extension Service work. While arrangements have evolved, advisors continue to work in all California counties today and address problems ranging from soil conditions and land reclamation to irrigation; from livestock breeding to improved varietals; and from mechanization to disease and pest management, to enable farms to increase efficiency and productivity.

San Joaquin Experimental Range 1921, 1930-1949

Series 7 San Joaquin Experimental Range

Historical Note

In 1931 Edward I. Kotok, Director of The California Forest Experiment Station (which later became the Pacific Southwest (PSW) Research Station) hired three range specialists (Murrell W. Talbot, Frederic G. Renner, and August L. Hormay) to initiate a U.S.D.A Forest Service rangeland research program. In 1934 the San Joaquin Experimental Range (SJER) was established in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Madera County.
During the Great Depression, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed the buildings, fencing, corals, watering locations and other required facilities. The headquarters buildings were constructed with adobe bricks manufactured atthe site. Acrew of CCC workers was used to make a detailed topographic survey of the station.
The initial purpose for the San Joaquin Experimental Range was to learn how to better manage foothill rangelands and investigate natural resource and animal husbandry problems associated with maintaining a commercial beef cattle herd on a year-round basis. With the exception of the Research Natural Area, SJER has been grazed since 1934.

Photographic Material 1921, 1930-1949

Scope and Contents

These photographs document research at the San Joaquin Experimental Range (SJER) and rangeland conditions in California during the 1930s. Most of the photographs in this collection were taken during the 1930s and early 1940s by experiment station researchers Murrell W. Talbot, Frederic G. Renner, August L.Hormay and Harold H. Biswell. Some photos were taken by other researchers and station staff including C. R. Berriman, J.W. Nelson, L. Short, J.A. Magee, L.A. Barret, W.C. Lowdermilk, J.R. Bentley, C.H. Gleason, Lloyd W. Swift. These photos were stored at SJER until the 1990s when they were placed inthe care of UC Cooperative Extension in Madera County.
Repeat photography at photo stations and of intensity of use (grazing) plots documented light, moderate, and close grazing levels (utilization) on SJER pastures and became the basis for grazing intensity recommendations and residual dry matter guidelines that are still in use today. Many of the images document rangeland vegetation types, rangeland erosion, relict areas, and rangeland developments on California's rangelands. Other photos focused on forage plant testing, experimental methods, livestock studies, rodent studies, and run-off research. There are also photographs of people and buildings at SJER.

Buildings 1933-1934

Scope and Contents

The photographs in these folders are of buildings located on the San Joaquin Experimental Range.
box 67, folders 5-18

Erosion 1930-1939

Scope and Contents

These photographs depict erosion around the state during the 1930s including the clousburst and flood that occured near Tehachapi, Kern County, California in 1932.
box 67, folders 19-21

Experimental methods 1921, 1935-1942

Scope and Contents

Photographs in these folders document research equipment and procedures used by SJER researchers including clipping frames, cages to exclude grazing, runoff plots, and weather stations.
box 67, folders 22-25

Forage plant nursery 1935-1946

Scope and Contents

Photographs in the forage plant nursery folders demonstrate SJER research tests on grasses, forbs, and shrubs for their adaptablility to California's Mediterranean climate.
box 68, folders 1-5

Livestock 1932-1939

Scope and Contents

Included in these images are photographs of livestock at SJER and around California. SJER was the site of a large-scale study to compare the growth of supplemented (protein) and unsupplmented cattle. Studies were also conducted on the toxic effects of acorn consumption.
box 68, folders 6-8

People 1932-1940

Scope and Contents

Several images in this collection depict people at SJER including photographs of field days and other gatherings. Some of the work on the SJER was performed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression.

Rangeland developments 1932-1935, 1949

Scope and Contents

Photographs of rangeland developments illustrate water troughs, water storage tanks, reservoirs, fencing, and quail guzzlers.
box 68, folders 11-12

Relict areas 1932-1935

Scope and Contents

These photographs were taken at locations believed to be representative of vegetation before it was impacted by grazing and other human impacts. They were often taken in places inaccessible to livestock or in protected areas such as cemeteries.
box 68, folder 13

Relict areas, rodent studies 1932-1938

Scope and Contents

In addition to relict area photographs, photographs in these folders demonstrate rodent studies that studied the impacts rodents had on forage production using enclosures to confine the rodents and exclosures to keep them out.

Rodent studies 1935-1938

Rodent studies, run-off plots 1934-1940

Scope and Contents

Run-off plot photographs depict plots installed to study the effect of grazing on runoff and other watershed attributes. These plots are still in existence.
