Biography/Administrative History
Penny Johnstone was a friend of Pat Bond’s, a renowned actress, comedienne, and activist within the lesbian community who
performed plays centered on lesbian history. This collection is Johnstone’s collection of items relating to Pat Bond. Bond
wrote and directed various one-woman shows that she performed in many states around the country, and received recognition
from various newspapers and television shows. She passed away in 1990, and became memorialized as her friends created the
Old Dyke Awards to honor old lesbians with underappreciated work.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection has pamphlets, advertisements, a movie poster, magazine features, and memorial pamphlets for Pat Bond. The
poster for the movie “Word Is Out” represents Bond’s participation in the movie. Most of the material is articles or advertisements
relating to Bond’s iconic impersonation of Lorena Hickok, who allegedly had an affair with Eleanor Roosevelt during the Roosevelt
administration. The collection also includes a photo of Pat with her partner, and a very small amount of material pertaining
to Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon.
