Abstract: The Catherine A. Callaghan papers document her scholarship on indigenous languages in California. The bulk of the collection
consists of dictionaries, grammars, vocabularies, field notes, research files and writings, and teaching materials related
to the following Native American languages and dialects: Bodega and Marin Miwok (Coast Miwok), Chochenyo, Lake Miwok, Mutsun,
Northern Sierra Miwok, Plains Miwok, and Rumsen. There are also audio recordings and a small amount of correspondence.
Physical Location: Many of the Bancroft Library collections are stored offsite and advance notice may be required for use. For current information

Language of Material: Collection materials are in English, Chochenyo, Mutsun, Rumsen, Marin Miwok (Coast Miwok), Bodega Miwok (Coast Miwok), Lake

Biography
Catherine A. Callaghan (1931-2019) was Professor Emerita of Lingusitics at the Ohio State University. Callaghan was born in
Berkeley, California. She received her B.A. in mathematics and her Ph.D. in linguistics from UC Berkeley in 1954 and 1963,
respectively. Callaghan taught at OSU from 1965 until her retirement. Her research focused on indigenous languages of California.

Scope and Content of Collection
The Catherine A. Callaghan papers document her scholarship on indigenous languages in California. The bulk of the collection
consists of dictionaries, grammars, vocabularies, field notes, research files and writings, and teaching materials related
to the following Native American languages and dialects: Bodega and Marin Miwok (Coast), Chochenyo, Lake Miwok, Mutsun, Northern
Sierra Miwok, Plains Miwok, and Rumsen. There is a small amount of correspondence, and audio recordings. The collection is
divided into seven series: Linguistic Notebooks (Field Notes); Writings and Research; Correspondence and Biographical Materials;
Coursework and Teaching; Bibliographic Materials; Vocabulary Slips; and Audiotapes.
