Series I: Organizational Records 1969-2014; undated

Scope and Contents

This series contains records relating to leadership and the organizational records of CARL. Sub-Series A: Constitution and By-Laws contains revisions, drafts, proposed changes, and correspondence relating to the CARL constitution and By-Laws. Also included are the CARL Articles of Incorporation, and the official CARL seal embosser. Sub-Series B: President Binders and Papers contains papers belonging to Wendy Culotta, Katherine Mawdsley, Stephanie Bangert, Venita Jorgensen, and Ron Rodriguez during their time in positions of leadership within CARL and includes: memorandums, executive board meeting minutes, and correspondence. President binders contain documents related to various positions and functions within CARL such as President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, membership directories, interest groups, committees, forms, meeting minutes, appointments, programs, conferences, finances, newsletters, and others. Sub-Series C: Executive Board includes meeting minutes, memorandums, notes, correspondence, roster lists, calendars, reports, campus liaison correspondence, memorandums, campus representative lists, VHS tapes, and other documents related to the CARL executive board. Sub-Series D: ACRL and CLA Records contains memorandums, meeting minutes, questionnaires, chapter relations activities, chapters manuals, and other documents regarding CARL activities during the time prior to and around the time of the merger with ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries), as well as the time during CARL's association with CLA (California Library Association) prior to separation. Sub-Series E: History and Archives contains guidelines for submitting material to the archives; documents and brochures related to CARL history; and correspondence and memorandums regarding submissions to the CARL archives.

This sub-series contains copies of the CARL Constitution and by-laws and includes related drafts, revisions, proposed changes, memorandums, and correspondence. This sub-series also includes the official CARL seal embosser, and Articles of Incorporation.

Sub-Series B: President's Binders and Papers 1979-2007

Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains papers belonging to Wendy Culotta during her time as CARL Chair-elect, Chair (1982), and past chair which includes memorandums, executive board meeting minutes, and correspondence; Ron Rodriguez' papers from his time as Vice-President South and President of CARL such as correspondence, budget proposals, and meeting minutes; Katherine Mawdsley's papers from her time as CARL President; and Venita Jorgensen's papers from her time as President and Vice President. A majority of the Jorgensen's papers were sent to her from Stephanie Bangert during Bangert's time as President. This sub-series also includes president binders which contains documents related to various positions and functions within CARL such as President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, membership directories, interest groups, committees, forms, meeting minutes, appointments, programs, conferences, finances, newsletters, and others.

Sub-Series D: ACRL and CLA Records 1969-1996

Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains memorandums, meeting minutes, questionnaires, chapter relations activities, chapters manuals, and other documents regarding CARL activities during the time prior to and around the time of the merger with ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries), as well as the time during CARL's association with CLA (California Library Association) prior to separation. Included in this sub-series is a short summary of CARL's merger with the ACRL chapters in 1979 and the succession from CLA 1991.

Scope and Contents

A majority of the records in this collection relate to the membership committee. Sub-series A: Scholarship and Awards contains documents and ephemera related to the Member of the Year, Research Award, and Library School Conference Scholarship. Sub-Series B: Nominating and Elections Committee contains nominating committee reports, memorandums, correspondence, ballots, and candidate biographies; Sub-Series C: Membership contains membership lists, reports, questionnaires, correspondence, applications, renewals, and disks related to the membership database. This sub-series also includes memorandums, policies, subscription lists, and correspondence related to the use of email reflectors (mailing lists); and various listservs including the CALIBACA listserv. Sub-Series D: Other Committees and Task Forces includes memorandums, correspondence, reports, notes, membership surveys; and other documents regarding the Ad-Hoc Committee on Organization, Long Range Planning Committee, Server Task Force, and WASC Task Force.

This sub-series also includes memorandums, policies and correspondence related to the use of email reflectors (mailing lists) which were maintained by the membership director and used to facilitate communication with CARL membership; correspondence and subscription lists regarding various listservs used by CARL including CALIBACA, which served as CARL's official listserv in the 1990s.

Scope and Contents

Interest groups featured in this series include: California Academic Reference Librarians Discussion Interest Group(CARLDIG);  California Academic Librarians in Management (CALM); Academic Business Librarians Exchange (ABLE); Collection Development Interest Group (CDIG); California State University Librarians (CSUL); Diversity in Academic Libraries (DIAL); Southern California Instruction Librarians (SCIL); Technical Services Interest Group (TSIG); and Community College Interest Group(CCIG). A majority of this series contains material related to Science and Engineering Academic Librarians (SEAL).
