Harding was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1893, and died in Berkeley on August 30, 1976. He graduated from Indiana University with an A.B. (1915), followed by Harvard University (M.B.A., 1917). He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve during World War I, then worked at a ship--building company in Tacoma, Washington, before joining the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company in San Francisco in 1928, retiring in 1958.
