Content Description

The Acción Latina and El Tecolote pictorial archive contains photographic prints (black and white and color), contact sheets, slides, negatives, digital photographs, posters, and artists' prints related to the organization's work on behalf of the Latino community in San Francisco's Mission District, particularly the organization's newspaper, El Tecolote, and its music festival, Encuentro del Canto Popular, and to political activism at the local, national, and international level. The present finding aid focuses on the fully-processed parts of the collection: the photographic prints and the posters and artists' prints. Photographs are largely undated but the oldest appear to be from the 1960s, with the bulk dating from the 1970s to the early 2000s. The archive includes images of demonstrations, marches, labor actions, parades, festivals, performances, concerts, exhibitions, lectures, meetings, and press conferences. The images also capture daily life in the Mission District as residents go to work, attend school, receive health care, play sports, and shop. Images of the Mission District built environment are also present: stores, churches, hospitals, schools, houses, theaters, parks, signs. The archive contains numerous portraits of local and national political and cultural leaders, musicians, artists, writers, dancers, actors and actresses, and other prominent community members. The collection also includes materials related to the production of three fotonovelas. The poster collection includes items produced by Acción Latina and items collected by the organization. Many of the former promote the Encuentro del Canto Popular and events connected with El Tecolote. Items collected by Acción Latina promote other music events, art exhibitions, poetry readings, and parades. They also champion an array of political causes ranging from local boycotts to international revolutions.

Biographical / Historical

Acción Latina is a non-profit organization based in San Francisco's Mission District. Acción Latina's mission is, "to promote cultural arts, community media, and civic engagement as a way of building healthy and empowered Latino communities." The work that would become foundational to the organization began in 1970, when San Francisco State University professor Juan Gonzales launched the community-based, bilingual newspaper El Tecolote with his students. In 2023, the largely volunteer-run newspaper continues to be published twice monthly and is now the longest running Spanish/English bilingual newspaper in the United States. Its print run of 10,000 copies is distributed in Spanish-speaking communities throughout the Bay Area. El Tecolote also mainains a website and produces a podcast. The newspaper covers regional, national, and international stories affecting Latino communities. In 1982, volunteers from El Tecolote and New College of California staged the first Encuentro del Canto Popular, a festival promoting Latin American music, which became an annual event. A grant from the James Irvine Foundation supported organizational and strategic planning work following Acción Latina's formal incorporation in 1987, and the first executive director was hired that year. In 2000, Acción Latina purchased a building on 24th Street in the Mission District to become its permanent headquarters, and in 2015 the organization opened the Juan R. Fuentes Gallery in the building "to showcase the diversity of visual art forms--ceramics, watercolor, sculpture, photography, poster art--created by established and emerging Latino/a artists." Acción Latina continues to host art exhibitions and tours, including the recurring community art walk Paseo Artistico, readings, and music events.

Photographic prints

Physical Description: 25 boxes (23 PIC boxes, 2 oversize boxes)

Arrangement

The photographic prints are arranged in subject categories established by the Bancroft Library. When received, the bulk of the photographs were housed by the organization in 45 binders, with a lesser number of photographs in folders or envelopes, and an additional 26 photographs in frames. The binders were often, but not always, labeled by subject and/or size of the photographs. However, the subject and size divisions were inconsistent, with related materials appearing in multiple binders and unrelated prints appearing within specific subject binders, and items of varying dimensions being housed in size-specific binders. Prints within each binder were not arranged chronologically or by event, and appear to have been placed somewhat randomly. Images from a single protest might appear in multiple binders, and photographs from a 1970s march, for example, might be intermixed with photographs of anti-war demonstrations from the 1990s. A decision was made, therefore, to rearrange the collection more consistently into subject areas. However, binder divisions were largely retained within those new subject categories; the new folders are annotated to indicate which binder the photographs originally came from. The binder numbers were assigned by Bancroft staff. In instances when the bulk of the images from a specific event were found in one binder, some attempt has been made to place single photographs of the same event found in other binders with the bulk of the images. However, researchers should be prepared to look through all folders in a series in order to locate all relevant images from any single event. While photographs on any given subject may be found in multiple locations, in some cases a concentration of images on a topic may be found in a specific folder or folders. In such cases, the location is indicated parenthetically in the Scope and Content note for the series.
Where the original binder organization seemed more rigorous, photographs from that binder were placed in the same series even if their connection to that series was not obvious. For instance, in the case of photographs in the El Tecolote series, images of people and events from the binder labeled "El Tecolote" were assumed to be related to the newspaper and were kept together.
The order of the prints in the original binders was not retained as the photographs' placement within the binders lacked any apparent organization, and conservation issues frequently required that the prints be rehoused in new plastic sleeves. Therefore, researchers should not assume that prints that, for instance, are now in the same sleeve were originally adjacent in the binder. Nor should researchers assume that the same event is depicted in adjacent photographs.

Acción Latina stored some photographic prints in folders, portfolios, and envelopes. These photographs can be found in folders marked "loose photographs" after the folders of bindered photographs, or, when they are of a larger scale, in the oversize boxes.

Scope and Content

The photographs in the archive appear to be largely a mixture of images taken for El Tecolote and images taken to document or promote Acción Latina events. The archive includes photographs of demonstrations, marches, labor actions, parades, festivals, performances, concerts, exhibitions, lectures, meetings, and press conferences. The images also capture daily life in the Mission District as residents go to work, attend school, receive health care, play sports, and shop. Images of the Mission District built environment are also present: stores, churches, hospitals, schools, houses, theaters, parks, signs. There are numerous portraits of Mission District residents, local and national political and cultural leaders, musicians, artists, writers, dancers, actors and actresses, and other prominent community members. The collection also includes materials related to the production of three fotonovelas (photonovels) and photographs that appear to have been created for exhibition.
A large number of the photographs have been stamped "El Tecolote Property of El Tecolote Photographic Archive All Rights Reserved www.eltecolote.org." Some photographs have the photographer's name, copyright or stamp on the back. A number of the photographs have crop and size enlargement/reduction markings on them, indicating that they were likely published in the newspaper. El Tecolote captions, with content and publication information, are adhered to the backs of a small number of photographs. In the original binders, notes with information, most often about performers at the Encuentro del Canto Popular, had been placed on the sleeves housing some photographs. Those notes have now been placed on the backs of the relevant photographs. The majority of the photographs, however, lack any information about the people or events depicted.
Photographs are largely undated but the oldest appear to be from the 1960s, with the bulk dating from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Older photographs are black and white; more recent images are mostly in color.

Fotonovela

Physical Description: 1 box

Scope and Content

Material related to three fotonovelas. "The Abused Heart/Abuso al Corazón" is about a man and his family in the days leading up to and following his heart attack. Materials include numbered photographic prints, contact sheets, designs for the cover, and copies of the envelope that held the photographs. The second fotonovela deals with the spread of HIV/AIDS. Materials include numbered photogaphic prints, contact sheets, and copies of the envelopes in which the photographs were stored. For both these fotonovelas the numbers on the backs of the photographs indicating their place in the order of the story are sometimes inconsisent. Some prints do not have numbers. Not all numbers are accounted for. The location of the negatives for the fotonovelas is not currently known. There are also unnumbered photographs that are assumed (because they were stored with the other two series) to be for a third fotonovela, which is about a young man at his job.

Posters, prints, drawings, and ephemera chiefly 1970-2016.

Scope and Content

The posters and prints collection consists of approximately 435 items (617 including duplicates) that either promote Acción Latina events or were collected by the organization.
Many of the posters Acción Latina produced relate to the annual music festival, Encuentro del Canto Popular. Examples date to the first Encuentro in 1982, with the latest example being from the 35th Encuentro in 2016. A large number of the Encuentro posters were designed by Juan R. Fuentes. Posters produced by Acción Latina also advertise benefit concerts for the organization's newspaper, El Tecolote, and other events related to the newspaper. A few posters promote the Paseo Artistico, a Mission District cultural event, of which Acción Latina is one of the sponsors. There are also posters for art exhibitions held in the organization's Juan R. Fuentes Gallery.
The posters collected by Acción Latina promote other San Francisco and California cultural events dating back to 1970, primarily music events, but also art exhibitions held at the Mission Cultural Center and other venues, poetry readings, and Cinco de Mayo, Dia de los Muertos, and Carnaval parades.
Acción Latina also collected a large number of posters related to political activism at the local, statewide, national, and international level. The political posters in the San Francisco and California series tend to advertise events -- chiefly rallies, marches, protests, boycotts, and lectures -- happening at a defined time and place. The political posters in the national and international series are largely designed to promote solidarity and awareness of causes and issues, however some national and international posters refer to conferences or meetings. California causes include: Los Tres, Los Siete, the 1978 Supreme Court Bakke decision, United Farm Workers and boycotts, housing, prison conditions, and immigration. National and international causes include: anti-imperialism, Central and Latin American revolutions and wars, human rights, the Cuban Revolution and Che Guevera. There are a significant number of posters produced by OSPAAAL (Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America), a Cuban political organization.
Acción Latina also collected artists' prints and other works on paper, including some original drawings. The vast majority of these are by local artists.

Arrangement

The posters are arranged in subject categories established by the Bancroft Library.
When a poster promotes a political event that takes place in California, it is included in the San Francisco and California political activism series whether the event relates to a local, national, or international cause. Events largely occurred in San Francisco; exceptions are generally noted.
Posters designed by Cuban political organizations (chiefly OSPAAAL, with a few by OCLAE and the Departamento de Orientacion Revolucionaria) are included in the OSPAAAL and other Cuban graphic design sub-series of the National and international political activism series. Posters about the Cuban Revolution or Cuban political figures that are not designed by Cuban graphic designers or agencies can be found in the Various creators subseries of the National and international political activism series.

Scope and Content

File 11 contains materials related to the 10th, 15th, and 25th reunions of a group that worked to free Los Siete in 1969-1970, including a signed guest book and contact sheets showing images of a gathering, likely from 1994.
File 12 contains an array of miscellaneous items: photographs clipped from newspapers (largely undated but some from the 1980s) most of which show labor demonstrations and strikes; a small number of newspaper editorials; a number of photocopies of the front page of El Tecolote (again, largely undated but some from 1987); postcards advertising a handful of theater or musical events; and a 1980 calendar that promotes Puerto Rican independence.
