Abstract: The collection contains records from the Sacramento Court of First Instance, the local judicial body of pre-statehood California
after U.S. annexation. Records date from 1848 to 1850 and include civil and criminal case files, court record and judgment
books, Alcalde Court documents, and court correspondence and petitions, plus documents from the Natoma, Mormon Island, and
Salmon Falls districts. Some records of note are case files relating to the Rising Sun Mining & Trading Company and the
Eagle Theater bankruptcy trial, and 1848 to 1849 documents in Spanish related to Dry Creek (Arroyo Seco).

Biography / Administrative History
Courts of First Instance were the local judicial bodies of pre-statehood California after U.S. annexation. They were overseen
by an alcalde or judge and tried civil and criminal cases until the court was superseded by the District, County, and Sessions
Courts established by state legislature on March 30, 1850.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection contains records from the Sacramento Court of First Instance from 1848 to 1850, including civil and criminal
case files, court record and judgment books, Alcalde Court documents, and court correspondence and petitions, plus documents
from the Natoma, Mormon Island, and Salmon Falls districts. Some records of note are case files relating to the Rising Sun
Mining & Trading Company and the Eagle Theater bankruptcy trial, and 1848 to 1849 documents in Spanish related to Dry
Creek (Arroyo Seco).

This book is labeled "Civil, Bonds, Criminal" and includes records related to civil cases, criminal cases, county officers'
personal bonds, and meetings of the County Grand Jury. Civil cases are in the front unnumbered section of the volume and record
litigants' names, court dates, and documents filed or actions taken. Personal bonds follow on pages 1-21 and 32-49. They are
made to the State and include name of bondee, names of sureties, date, office held, amount, and date of election. Criminal
cases begin at the back of the volume on pages numbered 1-10, 15-23, 25-35, and 43-71. Most cases list defendant, charge,
judge, date, and transcript of proceedings. Bracketed annotations (i.e., [Crim. 1]) are cross references to case files. Page
25 lists people appointed as court clerks. Pages 37-40 of criminal record are records of sessions of the grand jury dated
Jan. 1, 1850, (first meeting); Jan. 5, 1850, (second meeting); and Jan. 24, 1850. Each transcript records presiding judge,
names of jurors, and warrants returned. All sections are roughly chronological.
