Abstract: Documents collected by environmental activist JB McCrummen relating to activism in the wake of the blowout and oil spill in the Santa Barbara Channel in 1969. Materials cover the formation of the Santa Barbara-based environmental organization GOO! (Get Oil Out!) and the January 28 Committee, a coalition of student, environmental, and businesses leaders formed to commemorate the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. Materials date from early December 1969 to February 1970.

Biographical Note

Born in Clovis, California, JB McCrummen graduated from Fresno State University in 1964 with a degree in business and a minor in agriculture. McCrummen lived in Santa Barbara from 1965 through February 1971, and was involved in anti-oil activities, the anti-war movement, and other local political groups. McCrummen served on the GOO! (Get Oil Out) Board of Directors from the spring of 1969 to the fall of 1970. In addition, McCrummen served on the January 28 Committee, a coalition of student, environmental, and business leaders formed in early fall 1969 to commemorate the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. The commemoration was held on January 28, 1970 at Santa Barbara City College, with more than 1000 people in attendance.

Historical Note

GOO! (Get Oil Out!) was formed in the aftermath of the blowout and oil spill in the Santa Barbara Channel in 1969. Since then, the Santa Barbara-based organization has worked to contain and monitor the oil industry off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, through governmental and legal action, as well as through education and public awareness campaigns.
GOO! monitors legislation pertaining to oil development in the Santa Barbara Channel on the local, state, and federal level; supports offshore lease buy-back programs, the development of alternative energy technologies, and government policies local, state, and federal supporting environmental protection.

Scope and Content

Documents collected by JB McCrummen related to early 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill activism and the formation of GOO! (Get Oil Out!) and the January 28 Committee.
The documents cover McCrummen's service as a member of the board of directors of GOO! from 1969-1970, as well as his executive directorship of the January 28 Committee from early December 1969 to February 1970. Materials include board of directors minutes, agendas, and reports; GOO! bylaws and other organizational documents, as well as press clippings related to GOO! activities from 1969 to 1970.
The activities of the January 28 Committee are captured in correspondence and organizational documents, as well as photographs and ephemera from the one year commemoration event on January 28, 1970, held at Santa Barbara City College.
