Biographical/Historical note
Susan Clark Slaymaker grew up in Clinton, Mississippi. She received a B.S. in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics from Mississippi
College, and a M.S. in Solid State Physics from Tulane University. In 1974, she received her PhD in Geology and Geophysics
(with a minor in Astronomy) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Slaymaker was hired at Sacramento State in 1973, where she worked as a Professor of Geology. She established one of the first
classes at the university to be offered almost entirely on the Internet. In 2004, she received the CSUS Outstanding Service
Award for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. In addition to her contributions at Sacramento State, she was also
the President of the Geological Society of Sacramento and a board member of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.
