Abstract: Manuscripts, clippings, sociological research papers, correspondence, curriculum vitae, notes, photographs, audiocassettes, videocassettes and other material, 1956-2006, from sociologist and writer Brian James Miller. The bulk of the collection is writings, resource material, manuscripts for unpublished books, and recorded interviews pertaining to Miller's sociological research on gay men and their relationships. Personal and professional papers document Miller's career, as well as his relationship with former partner and mentor, sociologist Laud Humphreys.

Biography

Brian James Miller was born on October 24, 1950 in Wingham, Canada. He received his BA and MA in Sociology from the University of Western Ontario in 1974 and 1975, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Alberta in 1983, with his dissertation titled "Identity Conflict and Resolution: A Social-Psychological Model f Identity Formation." In the late-1970s, Miller was licensed in California as a Marriage, Family, and Child Counselor (MFCC) and worked in private psychotherapy practice in Los Angeles and West Hollywood for most of his career. He published articles and lectured on such topics as gay men in heterosexual marriages, gay fathers, sex and gender, gay victimization and homicide, and lesbian women in heterosexual marriages. He also worked as an adjunct assistant professor for California State University, Northridge. In the 1980s and 1990s, Miller was best known for writing the mental health advice column "Out for Good," published in Edge Magazine for over ten years. Miller died on April 5, 2006.

Scope and Contents

The collection comprises writings, subject files, research material, personal papers, audiocassettes, and videocassettes, 1956-2006, from sociologist Brian James Miller. The bulk of the collection is manuscripts, journal articles, clippings, notes, conference papers, bibliographies, and other resource materials Miller used for his sociological research, primarily examining gay men and their relationships. Included are his manuscripts for unpublished books, including a compilation of the mental health advice column he wrote for Edge Magazine and a book on gay fathers. His personal papers include materials documenting his career, correspondence, immigration papers, photographs, an award, and an interview with Miller's former partner, Laud Humphreys. The majority of the audiocassettes are recorded interviews with gay and lesbian individuals and mental health professionals, whom Miller interviewed for his research on gay relationships and families.

This series comprises Miller's writings and research material mostly pertaining to his sociological research on gay men and their interpersonal relationships, 1956-2004.

Scope and Contents

This subseries comprises book and article manuscripts, clippings, journal articles and reprints, correspondence, and notes written by Brian James Miller, 1975-2004. Included are the mental health advice columns he wrote for Edge Magazine, called "Out for Good"; his graduate theses and published journal articles on topics such as gay fathers, married gay men and lesbian women, and victimization; and drafts for proposed books on gay identity and gay relationships. Note that additional files with annotated manuscript pages from Miller's articles or books may be found in the Subject files and resource material (Subseries 1.2.)

Scope and Contents

This subseries comprises clippings, photocopied book chapters, journal reprints, manuscripts, conference paper proposals, bibliographies, correpondence, case studies, organization flyers and publicity, newsletters, and other papers collected by Miller, the bulk of which pertain to his research on gay fathers or gay men who are/were married to women, 1956-2004. Some files contain annotated manuscript pages from Miller's articles or books. The files also include Miller's extensive handwritten notes.

Series Description

This series comprises correspondence, resumes and curriculum vitae, clippings, photographs, and other papers documenting Miller's personal life and professional career, 1974-2006. Included are Miller's immigration papers, diplomas, professional certifications, material for a class he taught, and a trophy awarded to Miller in 2006. The correspondence includes letters between Miller and his former mentor and partner, sociologist Laud Humphreys. The photographs, 1976-1979, document Miller, Humphreys, and their friends or family.
