    Biographical Note

The Hamond family (later Hamond-Graeme), of Norfolk and Isle of Wight, England, produced three generations of men who had distinguished careers in the British Royal Navy during the 18th and 19th centuries. Sir Andrew Snape Hamond (1738-1828, 1st Baronet), was a British naval officer and Comptroller of the Navy. He was followed into the profession by his son Sir Graham Eden Hamond (1779-1862, 2nd Baronet), who was a British naval officer, vice-admiral and Commander-in-Chief. He was followed, in turn, by his son Sir Andrew Snape Hamond-Graeme (1811-1874, 3rd Baronet), who was a British naval officer and vice-admiral. Another family member in the collection is Sir Andrew Snape Douglas (1761-1797, 1st Baronet), a nephew of the elder Andrew Snape Hamond and a Flag Captain in the Royal Navy.
The collection also contains a considerable amount of material pertaining to Sir John Thomas Duckworth (1748-1817, 1st Baronet), an officer of the Royal Navy, a Member of Parliament for New Romney (Kent) and Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth.

    Scope and Content

The collection consists of several generations of Hamond family correspondence, including political, business, naval, and parish letters, as well as a significant number of letters seeking naval patronage, military honors and available ship-board positions. In addition, the collection contains historical accounts, poems, memorials, memoranda and ephemera. The Hamond men were in the habit of recording, after the fact, important political and naval conversations via written "memorandum," including audiences with William IV and Lord Melville. The collection also includes family material such as wills, sermons, genealogical information, memoirs and information on family naval careers.
The largest part of the collection concerns the naval career of Sir Graham Eden Hamond during the years 1834-1838 when he was Commander-in-Chief of the South American Station. This material includes accounts, correspondence, contracts, reports, monthly return books, ship's logs, ship's papers, receipts, lists, vouchers and volumes. The material details the running of Hamond's command, ships and the daily lives of sailors. There is also a small amount of material for commercial transport, convict and whaling ships, as well as material pertaining to the H.M.S. Beagle, under the command of Captain Robert Fitzroy, during the 1831-1836 expedition.
The collection also contains material relating to John Thomas Duckworth during his service in the years 1798-1802, from his part in the Capture of Minorca to his first two years as Commander-in-Chief at Barbados and the Leeward Islands. Duckworth is not linked to the Hamond family but this material is contemporaneous with other content in the collection. This material includes Admiralty correspondence, naval correspondence, Leeward Islands correspondence and papers, and ship's papers.
