Scope and Contents

This file contains one hand written letter from Henry Carnes to the Society of California Pioneers and is dated Dec. 30th,1892. Both sheets of paper that make up the letter are in Mylar sleeves and have some small rips on the edges. 1st Lt. Henry Carnes was born in Boston on June 10th, 1822 and he arrived in California on board the "troop ship Thomas H. Perkins, landing in the port city of Yurba Buena on March 6th, 1847.

Biographical / Historical

Lt. Carnes was a member of "Stevensons Regiment, Co. F", whose Capt. was a man named "Francis J. Lippitt." In the letter he is requesting information regarding membership with the Society but regrets "not having the funds to join". In the letter he details many of the regiments troop movements within Alta California during the "Mexican War." The letter goes on to detail many of the regiments' former officers and their evolvement in the American Civil War. Lt. Carnes served in the "provost marshalls office" during the War for three years under the command of one Colonel Jackson. Lt. H. Carnes was a "citizen of Santa Barbara since March, 1847, having only been out of the cities limits for very short periods of time.
