Biography/Administrative History
Dr. Daniel T. Mitchell, born in 1913, graduated from Loyola University in 1936. He served in World War II and went on to
earn his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California. His doctoral dissertation, “The Reception of Oliver Goldsmith's
Non-dramatic Works in the United States, 1768-1900,” is housed in the Special Collections Department, along with over 200
items from his personal library donated by his widow Ellen Mitchell in 1995.
Mitchell was an Associate Professor in English and Communication Arts at Loyola University from 1950 until his death in 1969.
As a professor, Mitchell served as the Chair of the Loyola Committee on Student Publications in 1968 and helped in the transition
period during the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College when the campus newspaper, The Loyolan became a joint
effort of the students of both schools. He died in Long Beach on November 27, 1969.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection consists of one archival document box with a single folder of letters that Daniel T. Mitchell mainly wrote
to his friend Doris Hamilton (née Harris.) Most of the letters are handwritten; at least one is typed. There is also V-Mail.
Mitchell authored most of the correspondence while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. His correspondence regarding
his service in North Africa and Italy includes many observations on how he was adapting to, and his intellectual interests
in, local culture.
