Collection contains course notes, with one diagram, completed in pen and pencil on 36 p. at beginning and end of notebook. The notes concern the fundamentals of chiropody and the practices involved. The notebook also contains tipped-in typescript letters and some printed ephemera relating to Pate's career as a chiropodist. These include a professional reference from Runting dated 1 November 1916, two other letters signed by Runting, a lesson from a correspondence course in chiropody, letters confirming Pate's membership in the Incorporated Society of Chiropodists in 1923, a letter acknowledging his resignation from the Manchester Foot Hospital in 1956, and a transcription of his obituary in 1959.

"Notebook kept by E. Pate, Esq., M.Ch.S. while attending a course in chiropody at the Silver Street Clinic under E. [Ernest] G.V. Runting, Esq., F.Ch.S., in October and November 1916. Also letters etc. dealing with his professional life."--Typescript label pasted by former owner on cover; additional typescript label on cover identifies "Battalion chiropody."

"Mr. [Edward] Pate [1887-1959] was a professional violinist untill [sic] joining the Army in 1916. He was selected for training as a Battalion Chiropodist and sent for training at the Silver Street Clinic of the Incorporated Society of Chiropodists. He received his trainng under Mr. Runting. After the war he started in practice as a chiropodist in Manchester. He took the correspondence course of the Incorporated Society (an extensive and detailed one under the tutorship of Mr. W.E. Clarke) in 1920. In 1921, after examination he was elected an Associate. Number 255. He was elected M.I.S.Ch. on the 6th July 1923. He played a notable part in the founding of The Manchester Foot Hospital, 1923 and served on the clinical staff until 1956. He was an active member to the end of his days of the Manchester branch of the Society of Chiropodists. He saw his last patient three days before his death on the 11th February."--Typescript label pasted-in before final section of notes.
