Biographical / Historical

Sir George Pocock, British admiral, entered the navy in 1718. In 1738-1744, during the War of Jenkins' Ear, he served in the Mediterranean fleet of Rear Admiral Nicholas Haddock. In 1744 he convoyed the African and East Indian trade, and in 1745-1748 served in the West Indies. From 1748 to 1752 he lived in England. In 1756 he was promoted to Rear Admiral of the White, then Vice-Admiral, and in 1757 assumed the chief command of the East Indian squadron. In 1761 he was promoted to Admiral of the Blue and was made a Knight of the Bath. In 1762 Pocock was appointed commander-in-chief of the successful expedition against Havana, Cuba, with Lord Albermarle in charge of the land forces. Pocock retired from service in 1766.

Scope and Contents

Official papers and correspondence of Sir George Pocock regarding the Admiralty administration; management of various vessels under Pocock's command; naval activities in the English Channel, the Mediterranean, and the West Indies, 1733-1748; intelligence regarding the French conquest of St. John's, Newfoundland in June, 1762; and the British expedition against Cuba, 1762. Correspondents include Rear Admiral Nicholas Haddock, Augustus Keppel, Viscount Keppel, George Keppel, 3rd Earl of Albermarle, and others. Personal correspondence between Dawsonne Drake and Sir George Pocock covers Drake's short administration as governor of Manila during the British occupation of the Philippines in 1762; social life and politics during Drake's subsequent residence at Fort St. George, Madras in 1762-1780.
