Biography
Charles "Chuck" D. Miller was born on March 1, 1928 in Hartford Connecticut. His parents were Mark A. Miller (1897-1973) and
Marguerite Daly Miller (1899-1983). Miller had three siblings: Audrey Ann Miller, Robert Arnold Miller, and Virginia May Miller.
Miller attended Johns Hopkins University and graduated in 1949. He married Carolyn Louise Cannon on May 15, 1982.
Miller began his career at Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company from 1949 through 1959. He joined Booz, Allen & Hamilton, Inc
as a consultant and associate in 1959 through 1964. In 1964, he began his career at Avery Products Corporation as Director
of Corporate Planning. He was elected to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in 1977. Under his leadership, he helped transform
Avery Dennison Corporation into a global Fortune 500 company.
Miller was also an active member of the community. He was on the Board of Directors at the following companies: Great Western
Financial Corporation, Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company, Beverly Investment Properties, Inc., Southern California Edison
Company, California Business Roundtable, and Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. He sat on the Board of Trustees at Johns Hopkins
University and Occidental College. He also served as Chairman of the Board of United Way of Greater Los Angeles. He was also
a passionate supporter of athletics and liberal arts education.
Miller passed away on November 23, 2011 in Pasadena, California.
Scope and Content
The Charles D. Miller papers consist primarily of memorabilia accumulated by Miller over the span of his career at Yale &
Towne Manufacturing Company, Booz, Allen & Hamilton, and Avery Dennison Corporation. The combination of business records and
Miller's personal notes, shows the growth of Avery Dennison under the leadership of a confident and innovative businessman.
Also included are items related to his involvement as a business leader and community activist. There are also some personal
letters and greeting cards sprinkled throughout the collection, primarily, during his later years. The memorabilia are organized
chronologically and include, but not limited to: correspondence, clippings, information packets, memos, newsletters, notices,
outlines, photographs, printed matter, reports, reviews, speeches, and summaries. At the beginning of the collection, there
are items related to Miller's father, Mark A. Miller. They primarily concern his career at The Yale & Towne Manufacturing
Company, where he was the assistant general manager. At the end of the collection, there are adhesive samples, stamps, compact
discs, VHS, photograph albums, scrapbooks, and 3-D objects.
Note: Miller differentiated "Avery" material from the rest of the collection. The distinction is inconsistent, though. Although
a folder may be identified as "Avery", additional Avery material may be found in the "Miller, Charles D." folders. Any duplicates
found in the collection have been integrated chronologically. The specific subject of a folder, when provided by Miller's
original folder description, is provided.
