    Biographical/Historical note

The Art Museum, located in the Arts Building, is one of the original buildings on campus designed by Pereira & Luckman in 1957. In March of 1995, the architectural firm of Levin & Associates was retained by the University of California, Santa Barbara to explore the reconfiguration and upgrade of the University’s Art Museum; the relocation of the entry of the museum to the south side of the building; and the creation of an entry element that would increase visibility of and access to the museum. Following the feasibility study the reconfiguration and upgrade was approved and completed in April of 2000. The Art Museum was given a new entrance orienting it to face Storke Tower and University Center. The remodel also included the creation of a new outdoor plaza.

    Scope and Content note

The University Art Museum renovation records span 7 linear feet and date from circa 1962 to circa 2001. The collection is composed of architectural drawings, reprographic copies, and slides of Levin & Associates’ alterations (floor plans, notes and diagrams, details, and elevations), a new room plan for the architecture and design collection by William Araluce, and renovation plans dated 1962 and 1974. The collection also includes an Art Museum Alterations Feasibility Study (1995), Construction Documents and Addendums (1998), photographs of the Art Museum Design Competition Entry event, construction photographs and negatives, and negatives of the completed Museum entrance and skylight.
