Biographical / Historical
George Duning (1908-2000) was an American musician, composer, and conductor. Duning came from a musician family and studied
Music Theory at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and studied composition under Mario CastleNuevo-Tedesco. He served in
the U.S. Navy Armed Forces Radio Service where he scored, arranged, and conducted "Command Performance" for Meredith Willson.
Duning signed with Columbia Pictures in 1946, where he scored over three hundred film and television projects including "3:10
to Yuma" (1957), "Cowboy" (1958), "Picnic" (1955), "The World of Suzie Wong" (1960), "Star Trek" (1966), "The Devil at Four
O'Clock" (1961), "Bell, Book, and Candle" (1958), and "Toys in the Attic" (1963).
Scope and Contents
This collection contains 103 folders of motion pictures scores of composer George Duning (1908-2000). These include scores
for Salome (1953), Miss Sadie Thompson (1953), From Here to Eternity (1953), Picnic (1955), 3:10 to Yuma (1957), Pal Joey
(1957), The World of Suzie Wong (1960), and Toys in the Attic (1963). There are also 34 folders of scores from television
programs including The Big Valley, Star Trek, Mannix, Then Came Bronson, and a scrapbook reflecting Duning's career.
